Burns Supper

PrintOn Thursday 12th January 2017, 51 Members of Orion Lodge and 5 other Lodges together with their Wives, Partners and friends gathered at the Yenton Assembly Rooms to celebrate the birth of Scotland’s favourite poet “Rabbie” Burns.

To the sound of the fiddle, the Haggis was paraded in amongst the tables to arrive in front of the Worshipful Master where our only true Scot, W Bro John Cowan, addressed the Haggis in the usual animated and vocal manner we have come to love and expect from him, much to the delight of all those present especially those witnessing the ‘Address to the Haggis’ for the first time, although it has to be said that most of us could not understand a word he was saying for some of the time.

Having dispatched the remains of the Haggis back to the kitchen ready to be served, following the traditional Selkirk Grace, we all tucked into a first class meal of Haggis, Neaps & Tatties, followed by Roast Beef with all the trimmings and rounded off with a really boozy Scottish Cranachan.

The toast to the man himself  “The Immortal Memory” was given by W Bro John Cowan, the toast to the Lassies was given by our Senior Deacon Bro Chris Worton, and in the absence of our own Chorister, W Bro Roger Miles, being laid low with “Man Flu”, the Ladies song was sung by W Bro Norman Blackburn of Concord Lodge. Our Worshipful Master’s Wife, Kate, gave the response to the toast to the Lassies letting us all into some of the secrets of the Macauley household.

The evening being rounded off with two choruses of Auld Lang Syne.

During the evening a Raffle was held which raised the sum of £168.00 for “We are Macmillan Cancer Support” The whole evening being under the supervision of our Director of Ceremonies, W Bro  Paul Jenkins,

P.S. I am reliably informed by the observer from the Provincial Team who was present, that the job of the existing Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies, is quite safe.
